Dr. Michael Holzer is a board certified family practitioner with extensive training, expertise, and passion for travel medicine. He received his undergraduate degrees from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. During medical school he also obtained a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine in addition to a Diploma in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health from Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He was awarded the Certificate in Travel Health® by the International Society of Travel Medicine and the Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers’ Health® awarded by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He has participated in medical electives in Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and South Africa.
Dr. Holzer completed his residency training in family practice at Malcolm Grow Medical Center on Andrews Air Force Base. He then served as a family practice physician at Osan Air Force Base in South Korea and Aviano Air Force Base in Italy.
After finishing his military obligations in Europe, Dr. Holzer worked at the University of Miami, where he spent clinical time in both the student health center and a University of Miami internal medicine clinic. As the resident expert in travel medicine, he helped design and implement the protocols needed for the University of Miami medical personnel deploying to Haiti as part of the Project Medishare relief effort after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
Dr. Holzer joined Concentra in January 2011 with the appointment of National Travel Medicine Medical director. He provides the training and medical oversight for the travel health specialists. He is also chair of Concentra's Travel Health and Infectious Disease Medical Expert Panel. Since August 2014, he has been a member of UCSF's Clinician Consultation Center Medical Advisory Committee.
Along with his expertise and enthusiasm for travel medicine comes a passion for foreign travel. He has traveled extensively in over 90 countries. He will certainly be surpassed by his travel partner - his 10 year old daughter, who he has already traveled to 65 countries.
